Cameron MacKinnon, from Calgary living in Dieppe, NB and training at the Atlantic Cycling Centre, spent two years out of competitive cycling prior to making his comeback in 2010. Now, he’s the Canadian Champion in the omnium, a six-race event that features both endurance and speed events.

“Now I get to go home, and train hard. There are plenty of young guys coming up like [Jacob] Schwingboth, [Jean-Michel] Lachance, and [Rémi] Pelletier-Roy. There are so many young guys so the future looks bright. It’s hard to say what’s going to happen on the World Cup season. I will be talking to Richard Wooles, the head coach of the team, and take it from there,” added MacKinnon.

Riding for Team H&R Block, Cameron spent a lot of time this summer doing road races, especially in British Colombia, including the 2011 IMMUNITY-FX Canadian Road Championships. Earlier this summer, he took the first place at the Giro de Burnaby.

Prior to his two-year departure from the sport in 2008, MacKinnon was one of Canada’s top sprinters, competing around the world and excelling. He won 12 Canadian titles in track cycling, combined in Elite and Junior categories, and now add the lucky 13th to his credentials, as well as titles in Individual Pursuit and Kilo races.

MacKinnon is no stranger to international racing as he participated at Commonwealth Games, Pan-American Games, where he won Gold in 2006, World Junior Championships, as well as World Championships.

Now, at 27 years of age, he’s slowly but surely on his way back up in the sport. MacKinnon rides in the Team Pursuit and in the Scratch for Canada at international events. This past season, he wore the Maple Leaf on his back at the World Cup stops in Beijing, China, and Cali, Colombia.

In addition to his Omnium title, MacKinnon won the titles for the individual pursuit and the Kilo races.

In the women’s race, it’s without any surprises that World Champion Tara Whitten of Edmonton, AB came on top, winning all six races to score the lowest possible points in the gruelling event.

“In am pretty happy to win. But I am also pretty happy with my training. It shows I am at a pretty good level right now. I am excited about the season to come. It’s less than a year to the Olympic Games now, so the main objective will be to prepare for the Olympic games. I am in  an excellent spot for qualifications, so I don’t have to worry quite as much with regards to the World Cups,” said Tara Whitten.

“The focus has been on some road racing and building endurance. I had a good training base this summer, but at the same time I believe in never getting to far away from the top speed. I have been trying to be on the track every ten days or so and maintain the sharpness,”  continued Whitten. “I am really hoping that at some point when I retiring I can do some things to improve the participation level and depth of track cycling in Canada, and especially on the women’s side.”

Laura Brown of Vancouver , BC took the second place of the omnium in a tight race with teammate Stephanie Roorda.
 
In her first race as in the Elite category, Jasmine Glaesser, who raced with a German licence but will receive her Canadian citizenship in the weeks to come, impressed many, almost beating Tara Whitten in the scratch race. The young Canadian cycling protégé, hailing from British Columbia, has a bright future in front of her. The young 19 year old racer flew in on the Tuesday night red-eye from Vancouver to race at the Canadian Championships on Wednesday, as she wrote her citizenship exam Tuesday.
 
In the sprint events, both Monique Sullivan and Travis Smith of Calgary, Alberta, successfully defended their titles. Smith won his two races in the gold medal heat against Joseph Veloce of Ontario, while Sullivan defeated Gillian Carleton of British Columbia.

Tomorrow, the event will feature another full day of racing with the start of the Masters and Para-cycling races.

Upon our arrival yesterday, we had the chance to quickly ride the new surface of the Bromont Velodrome (so new, we had to wait an hour for the freshly painted lines to dry!), and our riders were really happy with the work that was done. “The track is fast and the grip is good, it should be good for a good national championships; I just can’t wait for the same type of work to be done on our Caisse populaire Dieppe Vélodrome!” were the first comments from Jean-Richard Cormier when he got off the track. All we need to do now is to cross our fingers and hope Mother Nature will not send us too much rain.

The National Cycling Centre’s Selection program offers an opportunity to our young riders to develop and compete against the best in the country and even the rest of the world some times. So far this summer, this program has brought riders to the National Road Championships, the Tour de l’Abitibi, the Tour International de la Relève (Rimouski) and in August, we will attend the Quebec Mountain Bike Cup. We would like to take this opportunity to greatly thank the supporters of this program:

Mother nature has not been on our side here folks! As you may have noticed, the last BMX race for the Mike's Bike Shop Cup has been postponed twice due to rain. This is just a reminder that it will be held next Tuesday at 6:30pm (let's hope for no rain!).

Mother nature has not been on our side here folks! As you may have noticed, the last BMX race for the Mike's Bike Shop Cup has been postponed twice due to rain. This is just a reminder that it will be held next Tuesday at 6:30pm (let's hope for no rain!). Once the BMX series is complete, our three week criterium series will begin! They will be held at Dover Park (same location as last year) on August 23th and 30th, and September 6th. Once the crit series is done, we will do three weeks of mountain bike sprint races. We will finish the Mike's Bike Shop Cup series with 3 weeks of cross. Our apologies for all the date changes and event mix ups; we had to shift things around the future velodrome renovations! 

As a reminder, the current top three riders in the general classification are Mark-Andre Deslauriers in first, Jean-Richard Cormier in second, and Mike LeBlanc in third. Its a close race between the three, but there's still lots of races and plenty of time for things to change! 

Most of you are probably wondering about the track and whether or not we will have any Mike's Bike Shop Cup races on it once it is fully renovated. Realistically, it will not be fully renovated in time to hold 3 weeks of races. If it is completed by October, we will potentially hold an Atlantic Track Championship. More updates on this topic to follow!

The wedded couple of Vipond and Hadley are Canada’s top XC Mountain Bikers of 2011

(Edmonton, AB – July 25, 2011) Catherine Vipond of Oshawa, ON and Matthew Hadley of Mount Hope, NB both won the highest honours of the Canada Cup series as the 2011 season concluded Sunday in Edmonton, Alta, with the presentation of the fourth and last race of the 2011 Canada Cup Mountain Bike Series.

Vipond and Hadley, a wedded couple, participated in all four events across the country this year, and have posted the best overall results of the season.

Hadley won the first two races of the season, which gave him a solid lead midway through the season. After an average placing in the third race, Hadley raced back to the podium with a third place finish on Sunday, securing the Canada Cup title.

Cameron Jette of Toronto ON (3-Rox-Racing) took the second place with 470 points, stepping twice on the podium, in second and third places.

Evan Guthrie (Rocky Mountain Factory Team) and Léandre Bouchard (Cyclones d’Alma), two U23 riders, finished tied in third place with each 435 points. With his win on the last race in Edmonton, Guthrie won the tie breaker to give him the third and last spot on the podium, leaving Bouchard, the 2011 Canadian U23 Champion, in fourth place.

In the women’s category, Vipond stepped on the podium in all four races, winning the first and last race of the season. She fought a hard and tight race the entire season alongside Jean-Ann Berkenpas of Maple Ridge, BC with only five points differentiated the top two riders in the final standings. Berkenpas cumulated one win and two silver medals, and could have won secured the title with a win on the last stage of the series.

A total of 99 elite men mountain bikers cumulated points this year on the Canada Cup series in the elite races, while 38 women took part in the Elite series.

In the junior races, it’s no surprise to see Frédérique Trudel of Breakeyville, Qué. take the top honours in the women’s category, even though she is racing her first year as a junior. Trudel, the current Canadian Juniors Champion, started the season with two wins on her home soil in Québec before finishing second in Ontario and fourth in Edmonton. Trudel finished with a 55-point lead over both second place Catherine Fleury of Alma, Qué., and third place Haley Smith of Uxbridge, Ontario. Both Fleury and Smith finished the season tied with 230 points.

Marc-Antoine Nadon of Timmins, Ontario topped the standings amongst the men junior riders with the maximum 300 points. Nadon, also the Canadian Juniors Champion, led the standings the entire season and capped off his dream season with three victories in four races.

The season started back in late May with the opening race held in Mont-Tremblant. The tour stayed in Eastern Canada with races in Baie-Saint-Paul, QC and Barrie, ON before making its way across the country for its last stop of the calendar in Edmonton, Alta.

For standings purposes, the top three results of the four races were taken into consideration.

The event in Edmonton was made possible thanks to the tight collaboration between the Canadian Cycling Association, the Alberta Bicycle Association and the local organizing committee led by Mike Sanercki of the Alberta Mountain Bike Racing.

The Canada Cup National Cycling Series represents the highest calibre of coordinated domestic racing in Canada. The series is a stepping stone for any riders with the goals of achieve international success. There are two goals of the series: to provide athletes from across the country with the best possible competitive preparation to aspire to national and international level events, and to develop and promote the sport of cycling in Canada through the encouraged participation of all age and ability categories.

The series is celebrating its 20th anniversary. Since its inception in 1991, the Canada Cup Series produced elite athletes notably Olympians Catharine Pendrel (Luna Pro Team), Marie-Hélène Prémont (Maxxis-Rocky Mountain) and Geoff Kabush (Maxxis-Rocky Mountain), World Championships silver medallist Steve Smith (Devinci Global Racing) as well U23 National Champion Emily Batty (Subaru-Trek) just to name a few.
