[+]maximize For those who had doubts, or if you would have seen in the cycling media that Sussex’s Christian Meier was only listed as a reserve for the Garmin-Slipstream squad; well, he is starting the Vuelta a Espana! It’s a common thing for UCI to publish provisional lists that the teams provide them weeks (if not months) in advance.
This is a major accomplishment for the 24 year old rider. The Vualta Espana is part of the 3 Grand Tours and only a handful of Canadian riders participated in the history of those Grand Tours (also including the Giro d’Italia and the Tour de France). No need to say he will be the first Atlantic Canadian to ever start such a race. An interesting fact is that he’ll be accompanied by two fellow Canadians on his Garmin-Slipstream team: Ryder Hesjedal and Svein Tuft. Dominique Rollin is also listed to start with his Cervelo team. A major step for Canadian cycling!
“I’m pretty excited, but not to many butterflies. Just getting ready, hope the legs are as well to ride for the first week. We will be looking for sprints everyday for Tyler (Ferrar), could be some long days on the front! Then we have our GC guys to protect later on.” He just relayed via e-mail.
The Tour will start on Saturday and will go on until September 20th. Here are the stages:
1 - Assen - Assen (ITT) 4,8 km
2 - Assen - Emmen 203,7 km
3 - Zutphen - Venlo 189,7 km
