Latest news Para-cycling introduction camp [Tue Mar 16 9:25:59 PDT 2010] In the recent years, cycling for riders with a disability was fully integrated into the disciplines governed by the International Cycling Union. Cycling races for disabled riders are now listed on its calendar and two disciplines (road and track) are open at present.
The competitions comprise four impairment groups (blind and partially sighted riders, cerebral palsy sufferers, locomotor handicaps and hand cycle riders). Riders are placed in the appropriate category in the light of their functional capacity which is assessed during a medical examination.
This spring, the National Cycling Centre - Atlantic Canada, in collaboration with the Canadian Cycling Association, is happy to provide you with a chance to try cycling as a sport to satisfy your competitive, fitness or recreational appetite.
This camp will take place over two days, April 16 (evening) and 17 (until mid afternoon). See this file for complete information. Those interested may register by following this link. ... [-]minimize Spring Camp - April 2 and 3 [Fri Mar 12 7:30:16 PST 2010] We are very happy to give you the information for the Atlantic Cycling Centre’s spring camp (or Easter Camp). Some changes to note this year as we will focus this camp on the newly created Peter Wedge Racer Program. We currently have a good number of registered young riders (from the minime - U15 - and cadet - U17 - categories) and we feel it is very important for us to focus on such group for the future of cycling in our region. Due to a lower age group target, we also decided to make the camp a 2-day camp (compared to 4 in the past).
Elite riders from the Centre are also welcome to join the camp at any time.
The famous Fundy National Park ride will still be part of the camp. This year, it will take place on Saturday, April 3rd. It’s a great ride to be part of and is fully supported with motor vehicles and motorbikes. Everyone is invited to take part in such ride for a limited fee.
Everyone, Peter Wedge RACERS included, is invited to register before March 26th. You may do so by following this link: Peter Wedge Racers and Fundy Ride. ... ... [-]minimize Go Europe or South to avoid the snow... not so sure anymore! [Fri Feb 12 4:15:59 PST 2010] As the tradition goes, many Canadian cyclists have to either head south or to Europe every winter to complete their racing preparation. Two Atlantic Cycling Centre riders recently took that lead, but Mother Nature was keeping them a little surprise.
Yesterday, Riverview's Stuart Wight was turned around at the Bangor airport. He was scheduled to head to Tuscon, Arizona, to attend the National Team Training Camp. All fligths connecting via Washington, New-York and Newark were cancelled and resulted in his flight being deviated via Toronto, 24 hours later. You can follow Stuart's adventures on his personal blog.
Charlottetown's Ryan Taylor was in a diffrent part of the world, but also woke up to a surprising sight in Normandy, France yesterday. After enjoying a few days of nice riding with his new team, it seems Mother Nature either wanted to give him a break or send him in the basement and back to the good old trainer. "The city of Flers got 20 cm of heavy snow! Everything is closed from the stores, bus system, road. It'll certainly take a few days for the city to recover." mentions Ryan who also posted photos on his personal blog. ... The event was Wight's last one here in the region before he heads off to Tucson, Arizona to join the Canadian National Team for a ten-day warm weather training camp. Following that event Wight will be heading to France for the rest of the winter where he hopes the weather will not be as chilly as home.
Wight was joined on the start line by 44 other brave cyclists - a record number for the event. He took the lead in the first lap and never looked back. The win is a repeat of his victory in last year's race. The battle for second and third place was much more hotly contested as local riders Rheal Jaillet of Fitworks and Patrice Boudreau of Mike's Bike Shop CC spent most of the 45-minute race battling it out between them only to have to settle for 4th and 5th as a strong final lap surge by Jean Richard Cormier and Jeff Currie both riding for Mike's Bike Shop CC gave them 2nd and 3rd spots.
Other highlights of the day included a great ride for 41st place by 8-year-old Anthony Arseneau accompanied by his dad, Atlantic Cycling Centre head coach, Luc Arseneau, and Jean Jacques Ferguson's completion of the course on foot after destroying his front wheel in a crash.
The race was a truly maritime event this year as there were four riders from PEI competing and one from Nova Scotia as well as excellent representation from all over New Brunswick.
While cyclocross is normally a fall sport for cyclists, the annual Winter Cross has grown into a much loved fun event. The race is part of the Dieppe Winter Carnival and has grown in popularity each year. Spectator interest has also grown as there were many park visitors bundled up against the cold cheering on the cyclists.

This totally fun event, is run under a cyclo-cross format, but over a course covered with snow!
The initial objective of this event was to bring the cyclists outdoor in the middle of the basement trainers and stationary bike season and beat to winter blues! With the help of the City of Dieppe and the St-Anselme Park staff, the event grew, and especially its quality.
“Last year, we beat all the odds as no one thought we’d be able to create a cycling course through the enormous amounts of snow we had, and it was by far the best year;” mentions the Centre head coach and course designer, Luc Arseneau. “Less then a week ago, it looked like the event would be held on green grass, but Mother Nature decided to dump us a sudden 30 cm! Some thought this was the end of our 2010 event, but the heavy artillery was brought out by the city staff, and at this moment, I can tell you it’s the best course we ever had!”
So all cyclists, competitive or not, are invited to beat the winter blues once again, and come participate at the most fun event of the year! Every participant becomes a Champion! Although run under a cross format, mountain bikes are more then welcome for this event.
The event will take place on Saturday, February 6th; at 3:00 pm. Registration will take place at the Cycling Centre from 1 pm. ... [+]maximize The National Cycling Centre – Atlantic Canada’s Annual General Meeting is an important time of the year to reflect on Atlantic successes (Christian Meier signing a Pro-Tour contract, Team Atlantic taking the Tour de PEI, 5 riders meeting Sport Canada carding criteria, a first Canada Games medal since 1989 to only name a few) and to plan the future. It is also where the four Atlantic Provinces, the Centre, the CCA, and others, can sit together to discuss common goals.
This meeting will take place on February 6th, 2010 at the Dieppe City Hall from 11:30. During this AGM, we will go through the regular business of our organization, propose changes to our by-laws and proceed with the election of our officers.
In terms of our by-laws, we are looking at modernizing the Centre’s organizational chart. No changes have been made as such since the Centre was created in 2001. The objective is to activate the board and line up every responsibility to an elected / nominated position. As you’ll see in the chart bellow, the main responsibilities surrounding the functioning of the Centre are now directly link to a member of the corporation or management committee. We are also looking at replacing the positions of athlete’s representative and cycling community by two venue directors: Subway BMX track and Caisse populaire Dieppe Vélodrome. If accepted, the responsibilities of those two representatives will be directed to the Centre president in the future.

Elections of officials will also be conducted during the AGM. As our by-laws currently stand, we must elect three officials (from the cycling community) and a secretary / treasurer during our AGM. Among those three representatives of the cycling community, the members will select a president, a vice-president (to be part of the Centre’s management committee) and the other one will represent the clubs as a member of the Centre’s corporation – but this position may be replaced upon approval of the changes to the by-laws (organizational chart).
The current elected members of the management committee, Guy Vincent (chair), Jeff Currie (vice-president) and Philippe Thériault (Secretary / Treasurer) have accepted to run again for election. Other nominations could come from the floor.
Following the AGM, we will host our 4th annual Cyclo-cross Winter Championships! See our web site or facebook event page for more information. ... Although no official press release was sent out, it was published in various media yesterday that the Tour was officially cancelled for 2010; that, along with the Montreal World Cup and the Tour du Grand Montreal.
Short lived, but many great stories could be told about the greatest cycling event to happen in the Maritime Provinces. I quickly remember the experiences on the famous Confederation Bridge time trial, especially when we did an out-and-back race in 2007: coming to NB at 70 km/h and heading back to PEI at 24… a bit windy! I’ll also remember the crowds along the way, complete schools coming out to cheer the girls; a crowd that got even greater when we got to the final criterium around Confederation House in Charlottetown, simply incredible for women’s cycling. Most importantly, I’ll also remember the incredible way the girls were treated; like I’ve rarely seen it anywhere in the world. I’m sure that aspect could match any men’s race on the UCI calendar, after all, how often are you served lobster during a bike race!
The best, of course, had to be the final moments of the event in June 2009. Taking two of the podium spots was not only a great thing for Team Atlantic, but also for Canada. Organizer Daniel Manibal was also very proud to see a Canadian win one of his races: “It was one of my best moments as an event organizer. She won with a lot of character and the whole team had to fight for that jersey.”
Of course, I could go for a little while with fun anecdotes from the event, but whatever happened on the island, stays on the island!

Sussex’s Neil Symington, with 1095 points, finally took the top prize, but it was only after a long battle with his close friends, Justin Mallet and Julien Roussel of Dieppe. The race was such a close one, those two were actually tied with 1045 points, but Mallet’s win a few weeks ago made the difference. Those three were followed closely by another Peter Wedge rider, Marc Evers (935 point), while Mike LeBlanc was the first of the “original” Mike’s Bike Shop club rider completed the top 5 with 760 points.
The Mike’s Bike Shop Cup has a unique format in two ways: it amalgamates 6 cycling disciplines (cross country, time trial, track, BMX, criterium, and cyclo-cross) and ranks the riders according to a handicap system. So we know the winner at the end of the season is a complete cyclist. The events take place on Tuesday evenings throughout the summer and the atmosphere is nothing but a fun one.
Last night’s final event was taken by Moncton’s Krista Koval. She was followed on the line by Luc Arseneau and T.J. Worden-Rogers. For the last evening, the course was shortened, but did not lack in obstacles and fun sections. With Halloween just around the corner, and extra 10 points were also awarded to everyone showing up costumed. Don Ricker's photos from last night witness that.
