Dieppe's Justin Mallet finally took bronze in the U17 Omnium competition in Bromont during the Track Nationals. Over the four events (500 m TT, sprint, Point and Scratch races) he collected 15 points. Quebec's Marc-Antoine Noel took gold with 5 and Lambert Gatineau followed with 13. Mallet's team mate, Marc Evers also did well finishing 3rd in the scratch race, but unfortunately went down in the last event and could not finish. On the elite's side, the men were competition in the 4000 m individual pursuit. Cam MacKinnon turned many heads at his first race in 3 years by finishing 6th, less then 3 seconds away from the podium with a time of 3:53.95. Most impressively, Cam used to be a pure world class sprinter in this sport. Jean-Richard Cormier, at his first elite year, also did well finishing in 14th position with a time of 5:08.571.

Moriah Jo MacGregor, on her side, scored a bronze medal in the elite women's team pursuit with her Montreal based team, Specialized Mazda.

My next step is to compliment this social campaign with a political campaign. I am looking for any sport enthusiast who would be willing to meet with candidates in their riding to ask them to support sport should the get elected. Just received a quick message from Ryan MacDonald saying he finished 9th in his first event at the Youth Olympic Games in Singapore. He was 12 seconds back of the winner, Rafael Ferreira Reis of Portugal.

This represents a good performance by this young cyclist who was called up at the last minute to replaced his injured friend, Stuart Wight. "I'm really happy with how I did, as a 3 km strength course is not really my thing... I'm also happy because I know I definetly have a shot at the road race;" metioned the Canadian Road Race Champion. Ryan will compete again on Sunday.

The gold medal in Sunday’s Road Race for Ferrand-Prévot is her second medal of the weekend as she took the silver medal in the Individual Time Trial on Friday.

Laura Bietola (Greenwood, ON) posted the best Canadian result in the women’s race with a 28th place, 5 minutes 40 seconds behind the winner. Bietola will also represent Canada at the Mountain Bike World Championships September 1-5 in Mont-Sainte-Anne, QC.

Annie Ewart (Brentwood Bay, BC), who also competed in the Time Trial race on Friday, placed 40th, 10 minutes behind the gold medalist, while Julia Garnet (Saskatoon, SK) placed 45th. Véronique Drapeau-Zgoralski (Montreal, QC) did not finish.

In Men’s racing, Oliver Le Gac of France took home the junior title in another close finish, stopping the clock at 3:32.5. Le Gac separated himself from the leader’s peloton at the very end to take a three second lead over 14 other riders. At the photo finish, Jay McCarthy of Australia crossed the line second and Jasper Stuyven of Belgium took the third place.

The top 15 riders of the men’s race were all separated by less than 25 seconds in a race that lasted more than three and a half hours.

Kris Dahl (Calgary, AB) posted the fastest Canadian time, crossing the finish line with a time of 3:36.14 for the 69th position. Craig Logan (North Saanich, BC) was 94th. Ryan MacDonald (Greenhill, NS), Jean-Samuel Deshaies (Amos, QC) and Frédéric Poisson (Trois-Rivières, QC) did not finish.

STUART WIGHT UPDATE
Canadian Time Trial champion Stuart Wight of Riverview, New-Brunswick, crashed during Friday’s Time Trial. Wight, who was on a downhill portion of a curvaceous road, lost control of his bike rolling at speeds upward of 60 km/h. Wight sustained a partial torn of his left quad as well as a broken nose, and will miss the 2010 Youth Olympic Games scheduled for next week in Singapoure. Wight will be replaced by fellow Maritimes rider Ryan MacDonald (Greenhill, NS).

Wight is expected to make a full comeback from the crash, and should resume training and racing in approximately three weeks.

With the road events of the 2010 UCI World Junior Championships now completed, the spotlight now turn towards the Track Cycling World Junior Championships. The event for junior riders will kick off this Wednesday and runs to Sunday in Montichiari, Italy.

Ukrainian rider Cana Solovei posted the fastest time of the day for the World title, stopping the clock at 21 minutes 30.36 seconds. Pauline Ferrand-Prevot of France won the silver medal trailing Solovei by a mere 5.13 seconds, while Australian rider Amy Cure took the bronze medal.

Julia Garnet (Saskatoon, SK), the Canadian Road Champion in Junior Women’s Time Trial, was 23rd.

In men’s racing, Kris Dahl posted the fastest Canadian time stopping the clock at 42 minutes 33.34 seconds on the loop course of 28.5 kilometres, good for the 24th rank.

Luxembourg’s rider Bob Jungles took the gold medal with a time of 40 minutes 05.96 seconds, dominating the race with a 27-second lead over his closest competitor, German Jasha Sutterland in second place. American rider Lawson Craddock took the third place, less than one second behind the silver medalist.

Canada’s Stewart Wight (Riverview, NB), the Canadian Road champion in Junior Men’s Time Trial, did not finish the race.

A total of 57 riders took part in the Time Trial event for the men’s race and 31 took the start in the Women’s race.  The men rode to an average speed of 42.128 km/h, while the lady cruised at average speeds of 42.644 km/h.

This 2010 edition of the UCI Mountain Bike World Championships is third time the event has been held on Canadian soil and is hosted for the second time in the beautiful mountain resort of Mont-Sainte-Anne, QC. The region is world-renowned for its skiing in the winter, and mountain biking in the summer. Bromont, QC, held the first edition of the event on Canadian soil in 1992.

“Everyone on the team, whether it’s athletes or the support personnel, is excited about the World Championships being held in Canada for the third time. People from all ages have an amazing opportunity to come out, celebrate our athletes, see our Olympians, and learn more about the exciting sport of Mountain Bike and Trials,” continued Landry.

The team is highlighted by many of the biggest names in Mountain Biking such as Pendrel, Prémont, Kabush, Batty, Caron and Smith just to name a few.

Catharine Pendrel (Harvey Station, NB) is the current World Cup leader in the Olympic discipline of Cross-Country (XCO) and current Canadian Champion. Pendrel was Canada’s top rider at the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games in XCO with a strong 4th place result.

Marie-Hélène Prémont (Chateau Richer, QC), ranked 8th in the World Cup XCO standings, is an eight time Canadian champion and Olympic silver medalist from Athens 2004. Prémont will be riding on the same hill she began her development and progressed towards international stardom within the mountain biking sport.

Geoff Kabush (Courtney, BC) is leading the charge in the Cross-Country discipline with the Men’s Elite group. Kabush is the only Men’s rider with Olympic experience in the delegation. Kabush will be surrounded by Max Plaxton (Victoria, BC), Derek Zandstra (Trenton, ON) and Andrew Watson (Craighurst, ON), the Top 4 at the Canadian Championships race held earlier this summer in Canmore, Alberta.

Emily Batty (Brooklin, ON), who has had a strong summer on the courses of the World Cup tour, will be Canada’s best medal hope in the Women’s U23 category. Batty is the Canadian Champion in the U23 Category. Antoine Caron (Stoneham, QC), who was fourth in last weekend’s World Cup race in Val di Sole, will lead the strong Men’s Junior charge.

Canada will be represented by three Olympians, one Olympic medallist as well as a total of ten 2010 Canadian champions in various age groups and disciplines.

A total of 68 athletes will be representing Canada at the event. Canada will be sending a large contingent of athletes to the World Championships as it benefits from additional quotas as the home nation, in all disciplines and categories.

The CCA has maximized its quota allocation to provide younger riders with the opportunity to learn and acquire experience against the world’s best riders. For this reason the CCA has divided its athletes in two categories: Performance and Development.

This event will have a significant economic impact on the region of Québec as, in addition to the teams and their support staff, over 350 journalists from around the world will be in Québec for the event.

The World Championships will highlight all UCI Mountain Bike events: the Olympic Cross-country (XCO), the Marathon Cross-country (XCM), the Individual Downhill (DHI), 4-Cross (4X), the Team Relay (XCR), as well as the Trials event.

The World Championships events will be broadcasted on various television platforms, which include the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC). Broadcast details will be unveiled as the event comes closer.

The opening ceremonies of the 2010 UCI Mountain Bike & Trials World Championships are scheduled for Tuesday, August 31, 2010 in downtown Québec city. The road race will be on a loop course of 15.8 kilometres. The women will complete five laps to finish the 79 kilometre race, while the men will finish eight laps for a total distance of 126.4 kilometres.

Luc Arseneau (Dieppe, NB) will be leading the crew as the head coach, assisted by Nathaniel Faulkner (Bracebridge, ON).

In 2003, Canada hosted the UCI Road World Junior Championships in Hamilton, Ontario. The event has been held annually since 1975, where it was first run in Lausanne, Switzerland.

Situated in the heart of the Marche Region and the Province of Ascoli Piceno, Offida (5300 residents) is located in the hills stretching from the Ascoli mountains to the Adriatic Sea. At the end of the day the top rider in the A category was Dieppe's Jean Richard Cormier riding for Mike's Bike Shop with Fitworks riders Justin Mallet and Rheal Jaillet also both of Dieppe taking 2nd and 3rd spots. In the B category Fitworks young rider Julien Roussel of Dieppe took the gold followed by Nova Scotian Lucas McCullough from Pictou County in 2nd and Riverview's Richard Donovan taking the 3rd spot. Top woman rider of the day was Michelle Chase from Dieppe riding for Mike's followed by Fredericton's Julia Cormier.

As for the Apogée leader, Justin Mallet, who held the lead the last few weeks before loosing it on the last day in 2009, just edged Jean-Jacques Ferguson to take the Apogée jersey by 5 points. Halfway through the 2010 series, Mallet now has 385 points, Ferguson has 380, and Keith Godfrey has 345 points. Neil Symington (330) and Julien Basque (325) complete the top 5.

The next portion of the Mike's Bike Shop Cup will be more then interesting with BMX, criterium and cyclo-cross events to go. No less then 82 riders have entered the series so far, already beating last year's record!

The participants will now enjoy a few weeks of with New Brunswick weekend day coming up. The series will resume on the Subway BMX track on Tuesday, August 10th at 6:30.

The Canadian Cycling Association (CCA) and Commonwealth Games Canada (CGC) today announced the cyclists and coaches named to the Canadian Team headed for the XIXth Commonwealth Games in Delhi, India this October.

The list of accomplished athletes includes 2010 Tour de France competitor Michael Barry (Toronto, ON), who placed ninth in the Road race at the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games. Veteran team member Svein Tuft (Langley, BC), 2008 Pan-American Champion and silver medalist in the individual time trial at the 2008 UCI Road World Championships in Varese, Italy, recently claimed his sixth consecutive Canadian title in the time trial race at the 2010 Road Canadian Cycling Championships.

Zach Bell (Watson Lake, YK), who represented Canada on the track at the 2008 Olympic Games, won the men's Road race for the third time at the Tour de Delta earlier this year. Multiple Canadian Champion and medalist Travis Smith (Calgary, AB) recently won the sprint event at the 2010 Pan American Championships and won silver and bronze medals at the 2006 Commonwealth Games in Melbourne, Australia.

For the women, World and Canadian Champion Tara Whitten (Edmonton, AB) won the women's Points race at the 2010 UCI Track World Championships on March 28th in Copenhagen, Denmark. Monique Sullivan (Calgary, AB) won the sprint event at the 2009 Track Canadian Championships in Burnaby, BC. Joëlle Numainville (Montreal, QC) won the women's Road race at the 2010 Road Canadian Cycling Championships in Edmonton, Alberta, in the final peloton sprint.

“The Canadian cycling team for Delhi intends to contend for medals,” says Team Canada Chef de Mission, Martha Deacon. “With one gold, one silver and three bronze medals won in Melbourne in 2006, the cyclists will be highly competitive in Delhi and we are proud to support the already accomplished team members as the cycling team looks to surpass previous goals.”
                                                      
“With a team comprised of Olympians, a Tour de France rider, World Cup and World Championships medalists and Canadian champions, the hopes for the Canadian cycling team at the Commonwealth Games in Delhi are high,” says Jacques Landry, Chief Technical Officer of the Canadian Cycling Association. “The once-in-a-lifetime experience will have a lasting impression on our riders, especially as we set our sights on the Olympic Games in London in 2012.”

The CCA selected the track riders from a pre-qualified pool of athletes and through a selection camp in Los Angeles earlier in July. Athletes who had won a medal at a UCI World Cup event during the 2009/10 season or 2010 UCI Track World Championships pre-qualified to the Commonwealth selection pool. At the selection camp, athletes who met the criteria competed for the fastest times and were considered. Final selection was rendered by the National Team Head Coach and members of the Track Selection Advisory Group.

The selection of the Road team was prioritized based on the highest finish at the 2009 UCI Road World Championships, the 2010 Road Canadian Cycling Championships, gold medalist at the 2010 Pan American Road and Time Trial Championships, highest number of UCI points in road (women), and the best U23 finisher in the road race event at the 2010 Road Canadian Cycling Championships.

Supporting the 2010 Commonwealth Games cycling team will be coaches Richard Wooles (North Vancouver, BC), and Luc Arseneau (Dieppe, NB), along with mechanic Chad Grochowina (Hamilton, ON).

Delhi 2010 will feature 14 Track events, (eight for men and six for women) and two Road events (Road Race and Individual Time Trial events) for men and women. The track events will be held at the I.G. Sports Complex October 5 - 8.  For the Road events, the Mass Start event will take place at Vijay Chowk on October 10 and the Time Trial event at Noida Express Highway on October 13.

Week 9 of the Mike's Bike Shop Cup saw Moncton's Julien Basque taking his second win of the season; the first rider to do so. Over the 200 m distance on the Caisse populaire Dieppe Velodrome, he recorded a time of 12.45 seconds. Jean-Richard Cormier was a close second with a time of 12.71, while Patrice Boudreau recorded a 12.93. ...

Both Catharine Pendrel and Geoff Kabush successfully defended their Canadian titles on Saturday at the 2010 Mountain Bike Canadian Championships in the beautiful Rocky Mountains at the Canmore Nordic Centre in Canmore, Alberta.

Both Catharine Pendrel and Geoff Kabush successfully defended their Canadian titles on Saturday at the 2010 Mountain Bike Canadian Championships in the beautiful Rocky Mountains at the Canmore Nordic Centre in Canmore, Alberta.

In the Women’s category, Catharine Pendrel (Kamloops, BC) dominated the Women’s Elite race by winning with a time of 1:37.41, a lead of five minutes over her closest competitor Amada Sin (Collingwood, ON).  Mical Dyck (Victoria, BC) came third.

“I gave it all because I wanted to show myself I had the form, and I have a World Cup next weekend,” said Pendrel, who was born in Fredericton, NB and now residing in Kamloops, BC. “I wanted to feel things out in the start loop, and then try and go, push as much as I could. I wanted to race this race like I would on a World Cup.”

“National Championships are always important. To wear your National Champ jersey is a source of pride. I want to do it; I want to see our jersey out there. It’s a special race for everyone, no matter what level you are at,” continued Pendrel, the current leader on the UCI MTB World Cup standings.

“The Luna team has helped me a lot to get me where I am today. The CCA is getting really strong right now with great coaches. There is really good energy and support out there, and it’s great to see. Athletes have noticed a difference and it definitely improves performances out there,” added Pendrel.

The Women’s Elite group was missing rider Marie-Hélène Prémont, a seven-time Canadian champion, who decided to rest in order to bounce back from bronchitis before resuming the UCI World Cup tour next week.

The Men’s elite saw a much closer race, with Kabush (Courtney, BC) impressing again this season by winning his seventh consecutive titles. Kabush crossed the finish line at 1:45.15, just 45 seconds in front of second place Max Plaxton (Victoria, BC) and third place Derek Zandstra (Trenton, ON).

“I waited for the right moment to create some separation. In the fourth lap I decided to push over the top of the big climb and put on the pressure, and squeeze out some day light and then I was able to set in my rhythm,” said Kabush.

“It’s great to be representing Canada around the world. Winning the National title is definitely a goal of mine every season. The younger guys are pushing harder and harder every year, but I hope I get to keep it for a few more years,” explained Kabush.

Kabush took the time on Friday evening to talk about an initiative called RaceClean, which aims at promoting a clean cycling environment with doping.

“I wanted to get together with some of the younger riders at Nationals and send them the message that there are riders like myself that have achieved top of the World Cup, and that if they work hard, that they can achieve whatever they want,” said Kabush of RaceClean.

The 2010 Mountain Bike Canadian Championships is used by the Canadian Cycling Association as a qualifying event for the selection pool to the Canadian delegation for the 2010 UCI Mountain Bike World Championships in Mont-Sainte-Anne.

Emily Batty (Brooklin, ON) took her fourth Canadian title in the Women’s U23 category. Batty quickly started off the start line and never looked back. She crossed the finish line in front of Mikaela Kofman (Toronto, ON) and Rebecca Beaumont (Alma, QC), second and third respectively.

Jarred Stafford (Newmarket, ON) took the victory in the Men’s U23 race. Francis Morin (Magog, QC) crossed the finish line just 26 seconds behind Stafford, while Simon Lalancette (Chicoutimi, QC) came in third place.

Alex Harvey, a cross-country skier and winter Olympian using the Canadian Championships with hopes to qualify for the World Championships, finished 9th.

In the junior category, Kristina Laforge (Alma, QC) and Evan McNeely (Kingston, ON) took the titles. Laforge will be representing Canada at the first edition of the Youth Olympic Games in Singapor.

Amanda Wakeling (Courtenay, BC) and Antoine Perreault (Val-d'Or, QC) took the victory in the U17 category.

The 2010 Mountain Bike Canadian Championships will continue tomorrow with the presentation of the Canadian Championships in the Master categories, as well as with the National Challenge.
