He did so by finishing 3rd in the 20 km junior inidividual time trial.
It did not seem like the rain getting heavier affected in any way the new junior men national time trial champion. Antoine Duchesne simple flew over the St-Georges-de-Beauce 20 km course. Being the last one to leave, everyone was on their toes while awaiting his arrival.
It was Stuart Wight, from the Atlantic Cycling Centre, who took an early lead recording a sub 29-minute time of 28:47. For a long time, the first year junior held the lead of this event. "I was a bit nervous. It's a great position to be holding at your first year as a junior. I knew some strong guys were on their way, and we never knew what to expect every time another rider would cross the line." added the young rider.
That lead held until Ontario ride Matteo Dal-Cin (Team Ontario) came in with a new best time of 28:48. A few minutes later, the announcer attracted the interest of the crowd by announcing that Antoine Duchesne (Team Quebec) had actually past the halfway point with a lead of almost a minute!
One by one, Duchesne was catching up his minute men... everyone knew the time would be fast; And it was, 27:55, 52 seconds over second place.
On the women's side, the race was also a very interesting one, and especially offered us a diffrent perspective of the usual big provinces dominating the sport. Two of the top three spots were taken by riders from the Prairie provinces.
Saskatchewan's Julie Garnet took gold with a time of 32:27. Just like on the boy's side, she was also dominating by taking almost 40 seconds over second place rider, Adriane Provost of Team Quebec. Manitoba's Karlee Gendron took the bronze medal with a final time of 33:52. "I am very happy about this medal. I've worked very hard at it and everything seemed to fall well into place today;" later mentionned the one who will represent Manitoba later on this summer at the Canada Games.
The junior men and women will have the day off today, and will resume competition on Saturday while competing in the road race. The men will complete four laps of the 28,5 km course for 114 km, while the girls will complete three laps for a total of 85,5 km. ...
