The National Cycling Centre – Atlantic Canada was developed and saw the daylight in the spring of 2001. The impact of the Centre was immediate and the goal was somewhat surprising in the Atlantic cycling community: the develop Olympians.

The approach was also something new and different. With the many organizations being led to what members and administrators want, the Centre would propose a new approach to sport:

Athletes focused, Coach driven, administratively supported.

This philosophy enabled the Centre to focus totally on what the athletes needed; these service being offered by a professional coach. The administration of the Centre, the Management Committee, offers the coach its full support to accomplish very specific goals and objectives.

Before this, Atlantic Canadians had very limited successes on the national and international scene. With the exception of 3 riders, the past 10 years were marked by one rider, Peter Wedge. By himself, this riders collected 7 national championship podiums (he would collect three more titles after 2001), and had been on the national team program since 1992.

His status enabled the coaching staff to exemplify the true template of a champion. The young riders now knew what a real champion should be like, the angular item of a successful program.

Technical Director

Sheila Colbourne
Sheila has a varied and long cycling history. She started racing in her home province of Newfoundland way back in 1977 – a time when shorts were wool and helmets were leather. Sheila raced throughout the Atlantic region and in Quebec and Ontario and participated in the 1981 Canada Summer Games.

Sheila is also a commissaire and a Level 1 coach and has served in many volunteer roles including BNL treasurer, chief commissaire for Nfld and NS, president of BNS and head coach for BNS in 1989. Having lived in three of the four Atlantic Provinces she has a good feel for the state of organized cycling in the region and a strong sense of the history of the area. Sheila also holds a Physical Education degree from Memorial University.

Sheila spent two years as the Program Director of the Ontario Cycling Association and was there at a time when Mountain Bike racing made its first steps toward organization as well as during cycling’s heydays of the Steve Bauer & Curt Harnett’s glory days. One of the biggest challenges for Sheila was finding a skin suit manufacturer who would believe the measurements given for a suit to fit the thighs of Mr. Harnett!

Returning to the Maritimes in 1990, Sheila took a break from the cycling world but found herself back in on the start line in 2004 once her youngest son Stuart Wight discovered a passion for his mom’s old sport. While her initial plan was to stay on the sidelines and just coach Stuart, Sheila quickly found that you can run but you can’t hide for long from the lure of cycling. It was a short trip from, helping out at races by offering to hold at a TT, to working full time as the combined VeloNB Executive Director/ACC Technical Director – Sheila is happy to back in the thick of things and says she missed the smell of WD40 and chain marks on the calf.
