Peter Wedge Program
The Peter Wedge Program was run as a pilot program in 2007, and proved to be a great success. This program is targeting young cyclists who are looking to learn advanced skills and the basics of bike racing.
This program touches the Learn to Train aspect of the cycling Long Term Athlete Development spectrum. At this stage, we focus on all four cycling disciplines (mountain biking, road, track and BMX). One of the most important periods of motor development for children is between the ages of 12 and 14.
For years, one name stood on top the cycling in Atlantic Canada: Peter Wedge. When the Centre was developed and the first generation of young athletes was coming through, we quickly realized how respected Peter was as an athletes and a person by up and coming cyclists in this region. Peter’s career reflected many of the value desired to be reflected by such program.
Those values being the ones desired to be projected by such program. These values will also enable the program to respect the Sport Canada Learning to Train to-do list:
- Further develop all fundamental movement skills and teach general, overall sports skills. Otherwise, a significant window of opportunity is lost, compromising the ability of the young player/athlete to reach full potential.
- Develop strength using exercises that incorporate the child’s own body weight as well as Medicine balls and Swiss balls.
- Introduce hopping and bounding exercises or routines, or wheeling up gradients, to aid in strength development.
- Further develop endurance through games and relays.
- Further develop flexibility through exercises.
- Further develop speed by using specific activities that focus on agility, quickness, and change of direction during the warm-up.
- Structure competition to address differences in training age and abilities.
- Identify sports the child enjoys and is predisposed towards success. Narrow the focus to 3 sports.
- Introduce single periodization noting that some sports such as swimming and tennis need to use double periodization to adequately address the sport’s unique needs.
- Apply a ratio of 70 per cent training to 30 per cent competition. The 30 per cent ratio includes competition and competition-specific training. These percentages vary according to sport and individual specific needs. Athletes undertaking this type of preparation are better prepared for competition in both the short- and long-term than those who focus solely on winning.
- Encourage unstructured play.
At the conclusion of this program, it is expected the participants will understand the basics of all disciplines as well as start to understand the importance of good practice and training. We will also assist them during New Brunswick calendar specific events.
The program will start on May 5th and run once a week until the end of the school year and then go to twice a week for the rest of the summer. For more information or to register please contact the Centre at 877-7809.

... [-]minimize Peter Wedge season opener delayed[Fri May 7 9:45:52 PDT 2010][-]minimize Just a quick note to let you know we were scheduled to start tomorrow (May 8) but we will have to delay everything by a week.
Tomorrow, the Canadian Cycling Association and Velo NB are running a last minute coaching clinic that all Centre staff need to be part of to be able to coach the new “Let’s Ride” program. We apologize for those last minute details, but we just learn we all had to be part of it to be able to deliver the “Let’s Ride” program to the younger group.
We will be in touch to confirm next week’s session (details, hours and logistics).
If you still wanted to register for the 2010 Peter Wedge Program, you can do so by clicking here. ... [-]minimize Peter Wedge 2010 Program[Fri May 14 13:42:07 PDT 2010][-]minimize All right, as mentioned last week, we are ready to get going with the 2010 Peter Wedge season. Tomorrow (Saturday), we will meet at 10:30 at the St-Anselme Park to go ride (and learn skills) on the Mountain Bike trails. The session will last until noon.
In case of bad weather, we will post on the web site (at 9 am) if the daily practice is cancelled.
Note that we still have room for the program. If you know of any of your friends who would like to join, please let them know. ... [-]minimize Let's Ride and Peter Wedge Programs for long weekend[Wed May 19 9:57:03 PDT 2010][-]minimize After talking with many of the parents, I realized many had planed other stuff during the long weekend. Like last year, we’ll push our sessions to Monday evening at 6 pm (until 7:15) for the Let’s Ride group and at 6:30 (until 8) for the Peter Wedge Group.
Sorry for the inconvenience. ... [-]minimize Peter Wedge RACERS do well at first international race[Mon Jul 19 7:40:10 PDT 2010][-]minimize It’s with great smiles that the Peter Wedge RACERS just got back from there first ever international experience. The International Tour de Rimouski was a major stepping stone for these young cadet riders. The event was a 5 day, 6 stage road race that included teams from the North American peloton.
“They each have a success story to talk about at the conclusion of there first international experience. The fact that the Centre was able to prepare two teams (we were the only region with two teams) for that event was great”; mentioned one of the coaches present at this event, Sheila Colbourne.
In terms of results, PEI’s Simon Trivett turned a lot of heads by finishing 5th overall. Sussex’s Neil Symington, Dieppe’s Justin Mallet and Marc Evers finished (ironically) 23rd, 24th and 25th, while Julien Rousel (also from Dieppe, NB) finished 28th overall. Guest riding for our group, Fredericton’s Andrew Evans finished 47th. On the women’s side, Fredericton’s Julia Cormier was not able to complete to long stage race.
The Atlantic Cycling Centre’s head coach, Luc Arseneau was happy with the performances: “I really feel positive about this group and the way the performed throughout last week. I think it’s a good start to great things to come for this developmental program.”
... [-]minimize Track Nationals: Justin Mallet takes bronze![Thu Aug 26 4:56:25 PDT 2010][-]minimize Dieppe's Justin Mallet, of the Peter Wedge RACERS program, finally took bronze in the U17 two day Omnium competition in Bromont during the Track Nationals. Over the four events (500 m TT, sprint, Point and Scratch races) he collected 15 points. Quebec's Marc-Antoine Noel took gold with 5 and Lambert Gatineau followed with 13. Mallet's team mate, Marc Evers also did well finishing 3rd in the scratch race, but unfortunately went down in the last event and could not finish. Since the rain delayed some events, the 2000m individual pursuit had to be cancelled and pulled out of this omnium competition.
On the elite's side, the men were competition in the 4000 m individual pursuit. Cam MacKinnon turned many heads at his first race in 3 years by finishing 6th, less then 3 seconds away from the podium with a time of 3:53.95. Most impressively, Cam used to be a pure world class sprinter in this sport. Jean-Richard Cormier, at his first elite year, also did well finishing in 14th position with a time of 5:08.571.
Moriah Jo MacGregor, on her side, scored a bronze medal in the elite women's team pursuit with her Montreal based team, Specialized Mazda.
For complete results at these National Championships, consult the CCA page. The U17 category are done and heading back home, but the elites keep on racing until Sunday. ... [-]minimize
