Details (criteria, riders, results, etc.) of the Giant Elite program Elite program newsCCA Announces Launch Of Race Clean Own Your Victory Program [Wed Mar 31 8:04:29 PDT 2010] [-]minimize After extensive consultation with athletes and Provincial and Territorial cycling associations the Canadian Cycling Association is pleased to announce the launch of the Race Clean OWN YOUR VICTORY program. This program is athlete driven and compliments the highly successful Roulez Gagnants au Naturel program that the Fédération québécois des sports cyclistes has been delivering in that province and through their provincial teams at national and invitational events. The Race Clean OWN YOUR VICTORY logo was developed by Edmonton graphic designer Kathryn Jamieson-Lega. It symbolizes Canadian cyclists’ commitment to drug free sport and the words have a very profound and personal meaning. Race Clean: these words directly address and recognize the importance of fair play, clean sport, and the obligation racers have to compete within the rules. It is our hope that all Canadian athletes respect the rules which include not using prohibited substances or practices. OWN YOUR VICTORY: these words hope to promote a more personal and internal motivation for clean sport. We hope that every athlete strives to achieve their own personal goals or victories no matter what they may be; from local club races all the way to the Olympics. We also hope that they have complete ownership of these victories and are able to feel the reward of their hard work and dedication. We don't want the victories or accomplishments to ring hollow with ownership belonging to cheating or doping. No matter what the accomplishment we hope the athletes can look at their results with pride and never have to ask what they could have achieved themselves. We are lucky to have such great role models for clean sport in Canadian Cycling. Riders such as Tara Whitten, Svein Tuft, Catharine Pendrel, Geoff Kabush, Zach Bell, Erinne Willock, and others are showing that there is no limit to what you can achieve at the highest level of sport. “It was a much more difficult situation when I started racing but I am very optimistic for the next generation of cyclists. I made the decision very early in my career that everything I was going to achieve was going to happen naturally. It is so much more rewarding to be on top of a podium knowing that it was due to my hard work, dedication, and desire to continually learn and improve myself. I hope that the “Race Clean, Own Your Victory” message helps inspire the current and next generation of cyclists to make the decision to pursue their goals with confidence.” Geoff Kabush Team Maxxis-Rocky Mountain “I'm really excited about this athlete driven Race Clean initiative. Canadian cyclists are making a statement. Look to see us proudly Owning Our Victories this summer!” Catharine Pendrel Webcor Builders Women’s Professional Cycling Team "I choose to 'Race Clean' because I believe sport is the opportunity to challenge our bodies and perform at our full capacity through the aid of training, determination, discipline and passion." Erinne Willock LUNA Chix Pro Team "Personal achievement is only real if it is gained through honest athletic development. Success is only as worth having because of the journey it takes to achieve it." "We have to believe that sport and competition can exist in an honest drug free environment. By making this statement as a group we can strengthen our resolve and know everything we do as a national team is not only honest but can be achieved drug free." "If we can be successful drug free, young athletes will understand that ANY athlete can win drug free." Zach Bell Kelly Benefits - Medifast Pro Cycling Team From these testimonials it can be seen that our athletes are stepping up to the challenge and opportunity provided by the Race Clean program. At a recent camp in Tucson, Arizona members of the National Road and Mountain Bike Teams were presented Race Clean socks and wristbands to wear in training and competition for this next season. As the season unfolds there will be other aspects of the program present at National Championships and events hosted in Canada. Look to the CCA website for further information on the Race Clean OWN YOUR VICTORY program in the near future. ...[-]minimize Atlantic well represented on Junior national team [Thu Apr 1 10:40:38 PDT 2010] [-]minimize The Canadian Cycling Association is pleased to announce the athletes who have been selected to represent Canada during the Junior Men’s Spring European program from May 10th to June 7th, 2010. [Fri Feb 12 4:15:59 PST 2010] [-]minimize As the tradition goes, many Canadian cyclists have to either head south or to Europe every winter to complete their racing preparation. Two Atlantic Cycling Centre riders recently took that lead, but Mother Nature was keeping them a little surprise. Yesterday, Riverview's Stuart Wight was turned around at the Bangor airport. He was scheduled to head to Tuscon, Arizona, to attend the National Team Training Camp. All fligths connecting via Washington, New-York and Newark were cancelled and resulted in his flight being deviated via Toronto, 24 hours later. You can follow Stuart's adventures on his personal blog. Charlottetown's Ryan Taylor was in a diffrent part of the world, but also woke up to a surprising sight in Normandy, France yesterday. After enjoying a few days of nice riding with his new team, it seems Mother Nature either wanted to give him a break or send him in the basement and back to the good old trainer. "The city of Flers got 20 cm of heavy snow! Everything is closed from the stores, bus system, road. It'll certainly take a few days for the city to recover." mentions Ryan who also posted photos on his personal blog. ...[-]minimize Meier wins the Sprint jersey at the Tour of the Basque Country [Sat Apr 10 7:22:51 PDT 2010] [-]minimize Just received the official confirmation from Christian Meier that he clinched the sprint jersey in the Pro Tour’s Vuelta Ciclista al Pais Vasco. Although the rider from Sussex, NB, is not a sprinter, he claimed the jersey on day 1 by slipping himself into the big breakaway of the day a scored 14 points in the intermediate sprints. “It’s a tough race; thanks goodness it’s done and I still have the jersey on my shoulders” were his words in a recent e-mail.Although the race is not completed, tomorrow’s stage is an individual time trial, where no sprint points will be available. All Meier needs to do now is to ride the remaining 22 km within the official time cuts, and he’ll officially win the sprint competition of the 2010 Vuelta Ciclista al Pais Vasco (Tour of the Basque Country); a major event on the Pro Tour circuit. ...[-]minimize Juniors performing will in Europe for Canada [Fri May 28 6:42:05 PDT 2010] [-]minimize Two Atlantic Cycling Centre Elite Program riders are representing Canada in Europe these days, and doing well. Pictou County's Ryan McDonald and Riverview's Stuart Wight are currently racing in the Tour des Pays de Vaud, a major junior race on Switzerland. You can follow there progression here. After 2 weeks of preparation in Belgium, the event started last night with the 2.5 km prologue. Wight finished 9 seconds behind the winner (for 33rd) while McDonald was listed at 30 seconds (141st) after suffering a bad luck crash after attacking a corner a little too aggressively. Seconds will now turn to minutes as they will hit the famous Alpes today with some climb up to almost 10 km long! Next week, these young riders will compete in the Troféo Karlsberg in Germany. ...[-]minimize Road nationals here we go! [Thu Jul 1 7:13:22 PDT 2010] [-]minimize The initial weekend of road nationals was not a great for the Atlantic elite riders. Garmin's Christian Meier scored the best result with an 8th place in the individual time trial on Friday. On Sunday, Meier had all the intentions in the world to recapture the canadian title during the road race, but has he said it so well, everyone was watching is every move. On the U23 side, HR Block's Garrett McLeod was also disapointed from his weekend as he never found his good racing legs from a week ago. Louis Garneau's Geoff O'Toole was also bad lucky puncturing twice during the road race. On the women's side, Natalie Cormier competed in her first ever national championship and learned a lot from it. One of the favorites, Moriah Jo MacGregor was unfortunately pushed to the sidelines after suffering a concussion a few weeks before nationals. This weekend, it's time for the juniors to shine. Tomorrow, Stuart Wight, Ryan McDonald and Julia Cormier will attack the individual time trial with the idea to redeem the elites results. [Sat Jul 3 19:01:58 PDT 2010] [-]minimize In the women’s race, an early attack by Veronique Drapeau-Zgoralski (Team Quebec) was reeled in and Annie Ewart (Cycling BC) tried her hand at soloing off the front, a next to impossible feat because of the strong wind in the town south of Edmonton. It was finally a group sprint that decided the three podium spots with Drapeau-Zgoralski winning the top honour. Elodie Gillard (Atrium-CC2R) and Elisabeth Albert (Team Quebec) completed the women’s podium in second and third. "I tried a break away early on the main climb and to my surprise gained a lot of time. They reeled me in a bit later when the tailwind started," commented Drapeau-Zgoralski "Once I saw the line, I looked for an opening and there it was on the right. This title is amazing. I still can't believe it!" On the men's side, a breakaway that took off 45 minutes into the race had the Canadian champion within its ranks. Eight riders distanced the main group, at one point growing their lead to over six minutes. On the last climb, 25km from the finish line, Ryan MacDonald (Atrium-CC2R) blew away from the break to cross the line first to win the Canadian title. Only Frederic Poisson (Team Quebec) kept him in sight. At the finish line, MacDonald looked over his shoulder to see Poisson take second and Devan McClelland (Cycling BC) crossed the line in third, one minute, 24 seconds behind the winner. "The winning break got away in a peculiar way, we attacked and the peloton just sat up. I guess they thought it was just another false alarm," said MacDonald. "As a breakaway group, we worked very well together... But I saw everybody waning at one point and that is where I attacked...The learning’s from our national team development camps in Europe really paid off today," added MacDonald. The Canadian Road Championships continues tomorrow with the Criterium, an urban challenge event. TOP 3 - 2010 CANADIAN ROAD CHAMPIONSHIPS, JUNIOR (DEVON, AB) WOMEN 1. [Mon Jul 12 7:16:11 PDT 2010] [-]minimize Stuart Wight (Can) Hot Tubes sealed the win today in the sixth and final stage of the Junior Tour of Ireland. Despite many attacks in the stage, Wight and his Hot Tubes team mates contained everything they needed to to complete the victory for the lone Canadian on the team. Going into the stage Wight was in the lead by 1:45 over Joe Kelly of the Isle of Man. Kelly and everyone else tried hard to break the strong Hot Tubes team today over the 68km final stage - another hilly, windy tour of the beautiful Irish countryside and while several riders did manage to escape they were unable to put enough time between Wight and his loyal team who worked like Trojans to keep the time lost to a minimum. In the end it was Felix English of the Irish National Team who took the victory but not by enough time to unseat Wight from the overall lead which he had held since the second stage. On Monday Wight leaves his Hot Tubes team to head to the European base for the Canadian National Team in Belgium where he will take a couple of days to rest before beginning preparations for the World Junior Road Championships in Italy in August. We have selected across three cycling sports the best of the crop in Canadian junior cycling to represent our nation, and they are focused on winning medals for Canada,” said Jacques Landry, Chief Technical Officer for the Canadian Cyclist Association. “The Youth Olympic Games will be a great window to showcase our top junior athletes to the world, and introduce them to elite, high performance multi-sport Games.” Cycling is divided into four main events for the Singapore 2010 Youth Olympic Games: BMX, Mountain Bike, Road Race and Time Trial. Each team consists of three Junior Men and one Junior Woman, with the three Junior Men required to compete in two disciplines each (BMX, MTB, Road Race and Road Race Time Trial) while the Junior Woman has to compete in all three disciplines (BMX, MTB and Time Trial). All male riders also have to compete in the Road Race. The Singapore 2010 Youth Olympic Games will host 5,000 athletes and officials from the 205 National Olympic Committees, along with an estimated 1,200 media representatives, 20,000 local and international volunteers, and more than 320,000 spectators. In the Women’s category, Catharine Pendrel (Kamloops, BC) dominated the Women’s Elite race by winning with a time of 1:37.41, a lead of five minutes over her closest competitor Amada Sin (Collingwood, ON). Mical Dyck (Victoria, BC) came third. “I gave it all because I wanted to show myself I had the form, and I have a World Cup next weekend,” said Pendrel, who was born in Fredericton, NB and now residing in Kamloops, BC. “I wanted to feel things out in the start loop, and then try and go, push as much as I could. I wanted to race this race like I would on a World Cup.” “National Championships are always important. To wear your National Champ jersey is a source of pride. I want to do it; I want to see our jersey out there. It’s a special race for everyone, no matter what level you are at,” continued Pendrel, the current leader on the UCI MTB World Cup standings. “The Luna team has helped me a lot to get me where I am today. The CCA is getting really strong right now with great coaches. There is really good energy and support out there, and it’s great to see. Athletes have noticed a difference and it definitely improves performances out there,” added Pendrel. The Women’s Elite group was missing rider Marie-Hélène Prémont, a seven-time Canadian champion, who decided to rest in order to bounce back from bronchitis before resuming the UCI World Cup tour next week. The Men’s elite saw a much closer race, with Kabush (Courtney, BC) impressing again this season by winning his seventh consecutive titles. Kabush crossed the finish line at 1:45.15, just 45 seconds in front of second place Max Plaxton (Victoria, BC) and third place Derek Zandstra (Trenton, ON). “I waited for the right moment to create some separation. In the fourth lap I decided to push over the top of the big climb and put on the pressure, and squeeze out some day light and then I was able to set in my rhythm,” said Kabush. “It’s great to be representing Canada around the world. Winning the National title is definitely a goal of mine every season. The younger guys are pushing harder and harder every year, but I hope I get to keep it for a few more years,” explained Kabush. Kabush took the time on Friday evening to talk about an initiative called RaceClean, which aims at promoting a clean cycling environment with doping. “I wanted to get together with some of the younger riders at Nationals and send them the message that there are riders like myself that have achieved top of the World Cup, and that if they work hard, that they can achieve whatever they want,” said Kabush of RaceClean. The 2010 Mountain Bike Canadian Championships is used by the Canadian Cycling Association as a qualifying event for the selection pool to the Canadian delegation for the 2010 UCI Mountain Bike World Championships in Mont-Sainte-Anne. Emily Batty (Brooklin, ON) took her fourth Canadian title in the Women’s U23 category. Batty quickly started off the start line and never looked back. She crossed the finish line in front of Mikaela Kofman (Toronto, ON) and Rebecca Beaumont (Alma, QC), second and third respectively. The Mountain Bike World Championships are the biggest annual Mountain Bike event in the world in terms of importance. Over 850 competitors from 50 nations are expected to arrive in Québec City for the event. Over 1000 volunteers will be ensuring a smooth event for everyone involved. “This event is a great opportunity to showcase our talented athletes and the strong national program to Canadian cycling fans in Québec and in Canada. The team we have selected will represent their country with one goal, to win medals,” said Jacques Landry, Chief Technical Officer for the Canadian Cycling Association. This 2010 edition of the UCI Mountain Bike World Championships is third time the event has been held on Canadian soil and is hosted for the second time in the beautiful mountain resort of Mont-Sainte-Anne, QC. The region is world-renowned for its skiing in the winter, and mountain biking in the summer. Bromont, QC, held the first edition of the event on Canadian soil in 1992. “Everyone on the team, whether it’s athletes or the support personnel, is excited about the World Championships being held in Canada for the third time. People from all ages have an amazing opportunity to come out, celebrate our athletes, see our Olympians, and learn more about the exciting sport of Mountain Bike and Trials,” continued Landry. The team is highlighted by many of the biggest names in Mountain Biking such as Pendrel, Prémont, Kabush, Batty, Caron and Smith just to name a few. Catharine Pendrel (Harvey Station, NB) is the current World Cup leader in the Olympic discipline of Cross-Country (XCO) and current Canadian Champion. Pendrel was Canada’s top rider at the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games in XCO with a strong 4th place result. Marie-Hélène Prémont (Chateau Richer, QC), ranked 8th in the World Cup XCO standings, is an eight time Canadian champion and Olympic silver medalist from Athens 2004. Prémont will be riding on the same hill she began her development and progressed towards international stardom within the mountain biking sport. Geoff Kabush (Courtney, BC) is leading the charge in the Cross-Country discipline with the Men’s Elite group. Kabush is the only Men’s rider with Olympic experience in the delegation. Kabush will be surrounded by Max Plaxton (Victoria, BC), Derek Zandstra (Trenton, ON) and Andrew Watson (Craighurst, ON), the Top 4 at the Canadian Championships race held earlier this summer in Canmore, Alberta. Emily Batty (Brooklin, ON), who has had a strong summer on the courses of the World Cup tour, will be Canada’s best medal hope in the Women’s U23 category. Batty is the Canadian Champion in the U23 Category. Antoine Caron (Stoneham, QC), who was fourth in last weekend’s World Cup race in Val di Sole, will lead the strong Men’s Junior charge. Canada will be represented by three Olympians, one Olympic medallist as well as a total of ten 2010 Canadian champions in various age groups and disciplines. A total of 68 athletes will be representing Canada at the event. Canada will be sending a large contingent of athletes to the World Championships as it benefits from additional quotas as the home nation, in all disciplines and categories. The CCA has maximized its quota allocation to provide younger riders with the opportunity to learn and acquire experience against the world’s best riders. For this reason the CCA has divided its athletes in two categories: Performance and Development. This event will have a significant economic impact on the region of Québec as, in addition to the teams and their support staff, over 350 journalists from around the world will be in Québec for the event. The World Championships will highlight all UCI Mountain Bike events: the Olympic Cross-country (XCO), the Marathon Cross-country (XCM), the Individual Downhill (DHI), 4-Cross (4X), the Team Relay (XCR), as well as the Trials event. The World Championships events will be broadcasted on various television platforms, which include the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC).
