The event was Wight's last one here in the region before he heads off to Tucson, Arizona to join the Canadian National Team for a ten-day warm weather training camp. Following that event Wight will be heading to France for the rest of the winter where he hopes the weather will not be as chilly as home.
Wight was joined on the start line by 44 other brave cyclists - a record number for the event. He took the lead in the first lap and never looked back. The win is a repeat of his victory in last year's race. The battle for second and third place was much more hotly contested as local riders Rheal Jaillet of Fitworks and Patrice Boudreau of Mike's Bike Shop CC spent most of the 45-minute race battling it out between them only to have to settle for 4th and 5th as a strong final lap surge by Jean Richard Cormier and Jeff Currie both riding for Mike's Bike Shop CC gave them 2nd and 3rd spots.
Other highlights of the day included a great ride for 41st place by 8-year-old Anthony Arseneau accompanied by his dad, Atlantic Cycling Centre head coach, Luc Arseneau, and Jean Jacques Ferguson's completion of the course on foot after destroying his front wheel in a crash.
The race was a truly maritime event this year as there were four riders from PEI competing and one from Nova Scotia as well as excellent representation from all over New Brunswick.
While cyclocross is normally a fall sport for cyclists, the annual Winter Cross has grown into a much loved fun event. The race is part of the Dieppe Winter Carnival and has grown in popularity each year. Spectator interest has also grown as there were many park visitors bundled up against the cold cheering on the cyclists.

This totally fun event, is run under a cyclo-cross format, but over a course covered with snow!
The initial objective of this event was to bring the cyclists outdoor in the middle of the basement trainers and stationary bike season and beat to winter blues! With the help of the City of Dieppe and the St-Anselme Park staff, the event grew, and especially its quality.
“Last year, we beat all the odds as no one thought we’d be able to create a cycling course through the enormous amounts of snow we had, and it was by far the best year;” mentions the Centre head coach and course designer, Luc Arseneau. “Less then a week ago, it looked like the event would be held on green grass, but Mother Nature decided to dump us a sudden 30 cm! Some thought this was the end of our 2010 event, but the heavy artillery was brought out by the city staff, and at this moment, I can tell you it’s the best course we ever had!”
So all cyclists, competitive or not, are invited to beat the winter blues once again, and come participate at the most fun event of the year! Every participant becomes a Champion! Although run under a cross format, mountain bikes are more then welcome for this event.
The event will take place on Saturday, February 6th; at 3:00 pm. Registration will take place at the Cycling Centre from 1 pm. ... [+]maximize The National Cycling Centre – Atlantic Canada’s Annual General Meeting is an important time of the year to reflect on Atlantic successes (Christian Meier signing a Pro-Tour contract, Team Atlantic taking the Tour de PEI, 5 riders meeting Sport Canada carding criteria, a first Canada Games medal since 1989 to only name a few) and to plan the future. It is also where the four Atlantic Provinces, the Centre, the CCA, and others, can sit together to discuss common goals.
This meeting will take place on February 6th, 2010 at the Dieppe City Hall from 11:30. During this AGM, we will go through the regular business of our organization, propose changes to our by-laws and proceed with the election of our officers.
In terms of our by-laws, we are looking at modernizing the Centre’s organizational chart. No changes have been made as such since the Centre was created in 2001. The objective is to activate the board and line up every responsibility to an elected / nominated position. As you’ll see in the chart bellow, the main responsibilities surrounding the functioning of the Centre are now directly link to a member of the corporation or management committee. We are also looking at replacing the positions of athlete’s representative and cycling community by two venue directors: Subway BMX track and Caisse populaire Dieppe Vélodrome. If accepted, the responsibilities of those two representatives will be directed to the Centre president in the future.

Elections of officials will also be conducted during the AGM. As our by-laws currently stand, we must elect three officials (from the cycling community) and a secretary / treasurer during our AGM. Among those three representatives of the cycling community, the members will select a president, a vice-president (to be part of the Centre’s management committee) and the other one will represent the clubs as a member of the Centre’s corporation – but this position may be replaced upon approval of the changes to the by-laws (organizational chart).
The current elected members of the management committee, Guy Vincent (chair), Jeff Currie (vice-president) and Philippe Thériault (Secretary / Treasurer) have accepted to run again for election. Other nominations could come from the floor.
Following the AGM, we will host our 4th annual Cyclo-cross Winter Championships! See our web site or facebook event page for more information. ... Although no official press release was sent out, it was published in various media yesterday that the Tour was officially cancelled for 2010; that, along with the Montreal World Cup and the Tour du Grand Montreal.
Short lived, but many great stories could be told about the greatest cycling event to happen in the Maritime Provinces. I quickly remember the experiences on the famous Confederation Bridge time trial, especially when we did an out-and-back race in 2007: coming to NB at 70 km/h and heading back to PEI at 24… a bit windy! I’ll also remember the crowds along the way, complete schools coming out to cheer the girls; a crowd that got even greater when we got to the final criterium around Confederation House in Charlottetown, simply incredible for women’s cycling. Most importantly, I’ll also remember the incredible way the girls were treated; like I’ve rarely seen it anywhere in the world. I’m sure that aspect could match any men’s race on the UCI calendar, after all, how often are you served lobster during a bike race!
The best, of course, had to be the final moments of the event in June 2009. Taking two of the podium spots was not only a great thing for Team Atlantic, but also for Canada. Organizer Daniel Manibal was also very proud to see a Canadian win one of his races: “It was one of my best moments as an event organizer. She won with a lot of character and the whole team had to fight for that jersey.”
Of course, I could go for a little while with fun anecdotes from the event, but whatever happened on the island, stays on the island!
Thanks for being part of it… and let’s hope it comes back!... [-]minimize Happy Holidays! [Tue Dec 29 5:34:40 PST 2009] The Cycling Centre staff, its management committee, its volunteers and all the cyclists would like to send you there best wishes for the Holiday season!

"The upgrades were necessary and planned when we built the track. We initially built many jumps a lot smaller then what was designed. In order to get the kids to learn and progress, the jumps will now be brought closer to standard." mentions Centre Head Coach, Luc Arseneau. Riverview's Stuart Wight took an early lead which he held to the end taking 1st in the A category but he was challenged all day by Jean Richard Cormier and Jeff Currie who finished the day in 2nd and 3rd. The lone out of province rider, Ryan MacDonald fell hard part way through the race but toughed it out for 4th in the A category.
In the B cateogry local rider Craig Harper took the win over Mark Mosher (2nd) with 15 year old Neil Symington coming 3rd and Rene Julien 4th
The C race saw another young rider, Julien Roussel take top spot followed by Phil Roach (2nd) and Philippe Theriault (3rd). 4th place in the C race went to a very young lad, 8 year old Anthony Arseneau, son of the race organizer and riding in his first big race.
The next race in the Velo NB cyclo cross series takes place next Sunday in Fredericton. Details available on the Velo NB website,

[+]maximize It took 18 races and 5 bikes, but we now have a winner of the 2009 Mike’s Bike Shop Cup. This year’s podium was marked by one word as it was swept by 3 Peter Wedge Program riders: Youth.
Sussex’s Neil Symington, with 1095 points, finally took the top prize, but it was only after a long battle with his close friends, Justin Mallet and Julien Roussel of Dieppe. The race was such a close one, those two were actually tied with 1045 points, but Mallet’s win a few weeks ago made the difference. Those three were followed closely by another Peter Wedge rider, Marc Evers (935 point), while Mike LeBlanc was the first of the “original” Mike’s Bike Shop club rider completed the top 5 with 760 points.
The Mike’s Bike Shop Cup has a unique format in two ways: it amalgamates 6 cycling disciplines (cross country, time trial, track, BMX, criterium, and cyclo-cross) and ranks the riders according to a handicap system. So we know the winner at the end of the season is a complete cyclist. The events take place on Tuesday evenings throughout the summer and the atmosphere is nothing but a fun one.
Last night’s final event was taken by Moncton’s Krista Koval. She was followed on the line by Luc Arseneau and T.J. Worden-Rogers. For the last evening, the course was shortened, but did not lack in obstacles and fun sections. With Halloween just around the corner, and extra 10 points were also awarded to everyone showing up costumed. Don Ricker's photos from last night witness that.

What’s even more interesting, four young riders can still claim the overall classification. The organizers of the event could not be happier that those four riders are all products of the local Pepsi Cup as well as participants in the Peter Wedge Program.
The course was made even more technical then the previous week; and even if the weather was nice, the rain of the previous days made the course really soft. Last night’s event was taken by Bill Goobie. The podium was completed by Julien Roussel and Michelle Chase. Jean-Richard Cormier, with an exceptional performance like only he can come up with, totally dominated the event, but he was relegated to 4th place after the handicapping formula were applied.
So Symington, with 1050 points, took the lead last night by finishing 6th in a very hard cyclo-cross race. He is now followed closely by Justin Mallet (1030 points) and Julien Roussel (990 points). Marc Evers could also mathematically steal the show in next week’s final event as he now holds 850 points.
Very good photos of last night’s race are available on Don Ricker’s Photography Web site.

... [-]minimize Subway BMX Youth Series - Atlantic Champions are crowned [Tue Oct 20 7:05:56 PDT 2009] Some nice battles marked the 2009 Subway Youth BMX Series. Saturday marrked the conclusion of the second complete season at the Subway BMX track, a facility located in Dieppe’s St-Anselme Rotary Park. The numbers kept on growing and we are on our way of building something great for Atlantic Canadian cycling once again.

Saturday marrked the conclusion of the second complete season at the Subway BMX track, a facility located in Dieppe’s St-Anselme Rotary Park. The numbers kept on growing and we are on our way of building something great for Atlantic Canadian cycling once again.
For this Series, which also served to name the first Atlantic BMX Champions, we used some ability based categories to regroup these riders aged from 5 to 16 years of age. This way, the kids get to race with riders of their same level and greatly increase there chances to progress.
In the D group, the podium was separated by only 100 points at the conclusion of the 6 events. Sarah Martini took the top spot, followed by Olivier Aucoin and Leila Cartier. Sarah showed a lot of progression through the summer and actually moved up to the C group for the last event and actually finishing second in the race.
In the C group, we saw Nicolas Cormier collecting the maximum 600 points. Maxime Cormier (540 points) and Julien Cormier (440 points) completed the podium. Meanwhile, Vincent Cormier became to B group Atlantic Champion, followed by Odette Comeau and Alex Maltais.
In the fastest group, Ben Green came on top by collecting 590 points throughout the summer. He was followed by Neil Symington and Julien Roussel. A special mention goes to Luc Comeau, a young 10 year old who raced in this fast group with riders more then 6 years older then him.
Now that the racing and training at the Subway BMX track has concluded for the 2009 season, activities will keep on buzzing around the facility this fall. The City of Dieppe just approved a budget for some important renovations. It will improve drainage, completely lift the second stretch and lift the final corner. To progress with the development of the cyclists, we will also improve some jumps to get them closer and closer to international standards.
The National Cycling Centre – Atlantic Canada would like to congratulate all the initial Atlantic BMX champions and all those who participated. We would also like to thank the many volunteers, namely our BMX expert, Mike LeBlanc who is greatly marking the come back of BMX racing in Atlantic Canada. Special thanks as well to our major sponsor and supporter, Subway.
Hope to see you, and your friends in 2010! ... [-]minimize Velo NB Cross Cup - McLeod take the first one [Mon Oct 19 5:51:19 PDT 2009] In what proved to be a very interesting race between three of the top young riders in the nation, Wolfeville’s (Nova Scotia) Garrett McLeod came on top after almost 54 minutes of hard racing yesterday in Dieppe, NB; the experience of the rider from the Kona / H&R Block team paid off in the end. [+]maximize In what proved to be a very interesting race between three of the top young riders in the nation, Wolfeville’s (Nova Scotia) Garrett McLeod came on top after almost 54 minutes of hard racing yesterday in Dieppe, NB; the experience of the rider from the Kona / H&R Block team paid off in the end. He was followed closely though by two young guns, Andrew Lesperance (Halifax, NS) and Stuart Wight (Riverview, NB). For a long time, Lesperence proved to be the most spectacular of the three by jumping and climbing every obstacles of the St-Anselme Rotary Park without getting off the bike: “The course was so much fun and I was taking a lot of risks. But I know I’m not a good runner compared to Garrett and Stuart, so it was my way of putting some pressure on them.” But the fatigue of the two younger riders and the experience of McLeod, a two times medallist at cross national, eventually paid off. The battle was an epic one, but they also showed great respect for each other while they waited for Lesperence to do a quick wheel change after he flatted about 35 minutes into the race. “As an organizer, you have to be very happy with the quality of racing we had today. The A group podium alone, would compete in any event across this continent. They’ve done it in the past, and I’m sure they’ll do it again.”
Further down into the group, many other interesting battles were developing. Craig Harper made lost time on his opponents after his classic slow start to take the B class event over Neil Symington and Guy Pellerin. In the C group, Julien Roussel took the top spot on the podium in front of Rob Arseneau and J.P. MacIntyre. On the women’s side, Michelle Chase took the top honour.
Thanks to FitWorks for the donation of such great prizes at the last minute. A great thank also to all the volunteers who helped during the weekend along with the City of Dieppe.
The second heat of this Velo NB Cup will now take place in St-John on October 25th and will return to Dieppe on November 1st. Meanwhile, week 17 of the Mike’s Bike Shop Cup will take place on the famous St-Anselme Rotary Park tomorrow (Tuesday) evening at 6 pm.
